Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How many other boats had your dad built before this one?
A: None. This was his first boat-building attempt. (He built another yacht after this. However, its hull was not ferro-cement.) Q: Why did he build the yacht himself? A: He hadn't planned to do it himself, but those he thought would help him didn't. Instead of giving up, he figured out how to do it himself. Also he didn't have enough money to buy a seaworthy yacht; making it himself was cheaper. Q: Where is the Berenice now? A: I don't know. For years, Dad used to keep track of where it was through notes in various sailing magazines, but then he lost track. If anyone knows where it is, I'd love to hear about it. |
Q: How did you get a photo from such a distance?
A: A sailor on a passing yacht took it using an instant camera. Then he gave it to us in when we made a trade in the middle of the ocean. Q: Are your parents still sailing? A: They've had a number of boats over the years, but don't have any currently. Dad still talks about sailing away on another voyage some day, but he's busy rebuilding motorcycles these days. Q: What are the words under Berenice on the stern of the boat? A: Maryborough, Australia--which is the name of the city where the Berenice was officially registered. Q: How do you pronounce your last name? A: Our family treats the 'z' as silent and pronounces it as Trahs-koh. |
